Waiver/Opt-Out

If you do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver. You may only opt-out of coverage during the following Waiver Periods:

Fall - 07/01/2024 - 08/25/2024
Spring -
11/01/2024 - 01/25/2025

The Spring waiver deadline ended 01/25/2025. The online waiver system can no longer accept new waiver requests.

International student athletes with F-1 student visas are required to have health insurance that covers them while in the United States.  To waive the Student Health Insurance, your private health insurance plan must meet the following requirements:

  1. Medical coverage must be currently active.
  2. No Maximum Dollar Limit.
  3. Provide emergency and non-emergency health care.
  4. Provide in-patient mental health care benefits.
  5. Imposes a deductible that is not greater than $250 per person per policy year in network and $400 per person per policy year out of network.
  6. Proof of Medical evacuation in the amount of no less than $100,000.
  7. Proof of Repatriation of remains in the amount of no less than $50,000.
  8. Covers pre-existing conditions without a waiting period.
  9. Provides coverage for prescription drugs.
  10. Provides no less than 80% reimbursement of claims in network as well as no less than 70% reimbursement of claims out of network, for both emergency and non-emergency care.
  11. Athletes must have $10,000 I/C Sports coverage.
  12. All documents must be in English and U.S. dollars.

If your private health insurance plan meets the criteria you are eligible to apply for a waiver of the CofC Student Health Insurance Plan. Have the following information ready before you begin your waiver application.

  • Your medical ID card
  • CofC ID number (CWID)
